Visit the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

hot air balloons flying at Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

Who doesn’t love seeing a hot air balloon in flight? At the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, you can do just that—hundreds of times over. For nine days every October, New Mexico’s skies are dotted with brightly-colored hot air balloons. The event takes place at Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta Park, just a few close miles from your Barcelona Suites hotel room.  Fans of the event flock from all over the globe, and stay nearby to enjoy all the fun.

What To Expect

This Fiesta has been going on for more than thirty years, since 1972, and shows no sign of slowing down. It has grown to multiple events launching year-round, but the main event is the 9-day festival held every year. As the largest ballooning event on earth, it promises more than 700 balloons launched from the 78-acre Balloon Fiesta Park—imagine 54 football fields all put together. Needless to say, the number of balloons participating is nearly overwhelming for visitors. But the balloon launches are not all you have to look forward to when you visit Albuquerque’s famed fest.

Fun-Filled Fiesta

In addition to balloon launches, flying competitions, balloon races, and more, there are other events that attract visitors from all over. For instance, the AIBF Chainsaw Carving Invitational, which is exactly what you think it is—a carving competition in which the contestants use chainsaws—and the Fiesta of Wheels Car Show are two popular attractions that have little to do with balloon.  There’s also a Rodeo during a few of the days, and fireworks displays are shown off at night as well. Be sure not to miss the Balloon Fiesta Pin Trading Tent and the Balloon Fiesta Music Fiesta.

More to Love Than Hot Air Balloons

If you need even more to bring you to the Balloon Fiesta, fear not. There is also a film festival and a photo contest. The film fest started in 2012 and gives collegiate filmmakers a chance to develop short films featuring different aspects of the Balloon Fiesta. The photo contest is rather self explanatory, with categories for different aspects and events of the Fiesta, including:

  • Albuquerque Aloft
  • Dawn Patrol
  • Mass Ascension
  • Balloon Glow
  • Special Shape Rodeo
  • AfterGlow Fireworks
  • Grand Prize

If you’re interested in volunteering at the Balloon Fiesta, you’re in luck—each year, the event relies on more than 3,000 volunteers, so if you want to take part in a behind the scenes role, there’s likely a spot for you. Find out more at:
