Plan Your Trip to the Gathering of Nations
Every year in Albuquerque, New Mexico, people travel from all around the world to attend the Gathering of Nations, North America’s biggest Pow-Wow. Held over the fourth weekend in April, over 500 tribes from the United States and Canada gather to participate. The Gathering features performances, dances, singing and drumming competitions, a pageant for Miss Indian World, and more. Events at the Tribal Pow-wow
The Gathering of Nations features 32 different dance categories, as well as different age group categories including Elders (70+), “Golden Age” (55+), Adults (19+), Teens , and “Tiny Tots.” Singing competitions include Northern Singers, Southern Singers, Women’s Back-up Signing, and more. The pageant held for Miss Indian World chooses a winner based on personality, knowledge of tribal tradition, and dancing ability. Additionally, the Gathering of Nations features an Indian Traders Market, which features art and other artisanal goods from Native American artists, crafters, traders, and institutions – only positive images for and about Native Americans are offered up at this market. The market features more than 800 vendors.
Additional Information About the Gathering
This year’s Gathering of Nations is held at the end of April, at the University of New Mexico’s Arena, “The Pit,” every year. More than 3,000 Native Americans gather to participate in the event both socially and competitively. Learn more.
