Why Visit?

Whether you’re visiting friends or family, considering attending the university yourself, or interviewing for employment, there are plenty of things to see at the University of New Mexico. The University of Mexico was founded in 1889, and since then has attracted thousands of students and employees alike.  The central campus is noted for its Pueblo Revival architectural style, and the campus feels distinctively Southwestern. When visiting the campus as a prospective student or employee, there are plenty of other attractions to see there, including the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, the Geology and Meteorites Museum, the Southwest Biology Museum and the University Art Museum. There are also 12 libraries on the campus.

Things to See at UNM

Aside from academic pursuits, the University has a strong sports program, offering 16 varsity sports. The UNM Lobos are represented by two human mascots, referred to as Lobo Louie and Lobo Lucy.  UNM maintains a strong rivalry with New Mexico State University. The men’s basketball team is famous for its venue, the Pit, while the women’s basketball team has won the Mountain West championship several times. As for the Lobo football team, they’ve been to six bowl games since 1997. All told, if you’re a sports fan, you’ll fit right in.

While you’re in Albuquerque visiting the University, be sure to take in the local culture, as well. Visit local museums and nature preserves, check out shopping at the Coronado or ABQ Uptown malls, and enjoy local cuisine at any of the many restaurants in the area.
