Visit Albuquerque’s University of New Mexico
The University of New Mexico is an Albuquerque staple. It is the state’s flagship research institution and the largest post-secondary institution in New Mexico. As of 2012, it’s one of the state’s largest employers. The Albuquerque campus is currently laid out over 600 acres, and offers bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degree programs in a variety of fields.
Whether you’re visiting friends or family, considering attending the university yourself, or interviewing for employment, there are plenty of things to see at the University of New Mexico. The University of Mexico was founded in 1889, and since then has attracted thousands of students and employees alike. The central campus is noted for its Pueblo Revival architectural style, and the campus feels distinctively Southwestern. When visiting the campus as a prospective student or employee, there are plenty of other attractions to see there, including the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, the Geology and Meteorites Museum, the Southwest Biology Museum and the University Art Museum. There are also 12 libraries on the campus.
Things to See at UNM
Aside from academic pursuits, the University has a strong sports program, offering 16 varsity sports. The UNM Lobos are represented by two human mascots, referred to as Lobo Louie and Lobo Lucy. UNM maintains a strong rivalry with New Mexico State University. The men’s basketball team is famous for its venue, the Pit, while the women’s basketball team has won the Mountain West championship several times. As for the Lobo football team, they’ve been to six bowl games since 1997. All told, if you’re a sports fan, you’ll fit right in.
