Visit the Winrock Town Center
When you’re on vacation, chances are you might want to do some shopping. Sometimes there aren’t many options for doing that, but in Albuquerque, that’s simply not the case. Here, in addition to plenty of antique and boutique shops, there are several large shopping centers, including the Winrock Town Center located in Uptown.
Formerly the Winrock Shopping Center
Currently, the mall is going through a bit of a redevelopment phase and is getting a facelift. Locals and tourists alike are excited about the change, as the structure had gone downhill over the past decade and at the turn of the century in 2000, the mall most mostly abandoned with just a few flagship stores anchoring it. The center first opened in 1961 and had 42 stores then with 3 anchor tenants. It’s located on 82 acres of land in Albuquerque, and was a joint venture between the soon-to-be Arkansas governor Winthrop Rockefeller and the University of New Mexico. It also used to have a freestanding movie theater! It has been the setting for a few films, including 2009’s Observe and Report, and until recently, has been largely empty. But no more!
What’s Next for the Winrock Town Center?
The Winrock Shopping Center has been renamed the Winrock Town Center, and in February 2012, Goodman Realty Group announced it had signed long term leases with three major restaurants—Dave and Buster’s, BJ’s Restaurant and Brew house, and Genghis Grill. The new center will be built around the existing Dillard’s and Bed Bath & Beyond stores, and the entire center will open in Spring 2014 – perfect for your upcoming vacation. It is said that the new Center will also include “ABQ Active,” a state-of-the-art sports training center that will include things like zip lining, indoor skydiving, climbing walls and indoor scuba diving.
