Heading to the Southwest in wintertime is a perfect getaway. In most of the country, temperatures are taking a nosedive in December, but in Albuquerque, it’s still sunny and warm—what’s not to love? If you’re planning a trip away from the cold this winter, consider adding these Albuquerque events to your travel itinerary.
Old Town Holiday Stroll
The annual lighting of the Christmas tree in Don Luis Plaza is what kicks off this night of entertainment, dining, and shopping. This event features things like luminarias and twinkling lights to evoke holiday cheer. At the Holiday Stroll, you’ll be able to purchase this year’s collectible lapel pin, which provides you with a discount for purchases at participating merchants. All proceeds from the pin sales go to local charities, too, so you’ll feel great about your purchase.
In addition to shopping till you drop and enjoying live music and other entertainment, Old Town’s many shops and galleries will be offering up unique gifts. The Old Town Holiday Stroll is scheduled for December 4 from 5-9 p.m., on Rio Grande Blvd. N.W. and Central Ave. N.W.
Twinkle Light Parade
On December 5 at 5:15 p.m., check out the Twinkle Light Parade, a spectacular, family-friendly event featuring dozens of floats, equestrian clubs, fire trucks, car clubs, marching bands, and other business floats, complete with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. With more than 300,000 lights on display, this parade will light up the night, and admission is free. Perfect!
Held on December 24th from 5:20 to 7:40 p.m., the Luminaria tour is a New Mexican tradition. ABQ Ride sponsors this ride through Old Town, including seeing Albuquerque Country Club and other hotspots decked out for the holidays. This event is $3 for adults, and $1.70 for children 10-18 and seniors.
River of Lights
River of Lights takes place from November 28 to January 2 at the ABQ BioPark (903 10th St. S.W.), and features over 150 light displays including animated sculptures and synchronized music. It’s New Mexico’s largest walk-through holiday production—don’t miss it!
18th Annual Nutcracker on the Rocks
Performing Thursdays-Sundays from December 3 to December 13, this pairs traditional and contemporary dance, featuring Tchaikovsky’s Overture and Pas De Deux. However, this performance reimagines the classic tale, adding in songs by Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, and more. Modern dance styles such as swing and hip-hop are melded with classical dances moves. It’s perfect for a non-traditional outing. Get tickets through the Keshet Center for the Arts.
A Christmas Carol
At Albuquerque’s Little Theater, check out this highly inventive adaptation of the classic story. Of course, you’ll see the regulars like Ebenezer Scrooge, but we don’t want to give away too much about this one-of-a-kind performance. The Christmas spirit will run high after this one! Check it out on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from December 4 to December 20.
