This year’s New Mexico State Fair is coming up sooner than you think—it takes place from September 11-22, and this year is sure to impress. It’s the 75th anniversary of the fair, and the events showcase a variety of different interests. Here are some top picks of things not to miss during your stay in Albuquerque.
2013 State Fair Concerts
There’s music for everyone’s ears this year at the fair, from Night Ranger and Loverboy on Thursday, September 12, to the Eli Young Band on September 21, and every genre in between. The Noms, an indie rock band, open up the festival at 6 p.m. on opening day, and will be followed by Morgan Fraizer, a country artist. The rest of the musical acts include reggae act Reviva, a cover band called The Dirty Shades, a country band called Bartender 4 Mayor, and tribute bands honoring the Beatles (called The Reunion) and Michael Jackson (called Bad). No matter what kind of music tickles your fancy, you’re sure to find something at the state fair pavilion.
Horse and Livestock Shows
Of course, it wouldn’t be a state fair without horse and livestock shows. Check out the miniature horse show as well as the 4-H State Championship horse show, and don’t miss the plethora of different shows that feature different livestock animals, from poultry to cattle, sheep to pygmy goats.
Who will be crowned this year’s fair queen? Last year, Stephanie Bailey of Curry County was crowned the 74th New Mexico State Fair Queen. She won a handmade saddle, a new horse trailer, a sterling silver crown and buckle, and a cash prize. The State Fair Queen is an official representative of the Fair, and serves as an ambassador to the general public. Don’t miss this contest.
Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge
Finally, head to the Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge. It features 12 established restaurant competitors, and each dish must include a meat or vegetable patty, cheese, and Green Chile that is grown from a New Mexico location. The winner will be featured in the New Mexico Tourism Department’s Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail.
Head to Albuquerque next month for all this and more. When you’re tired out from the festivities, head to your suite at the Barcelona Suites, featuring comfortable Albuquerque hotel rooms for tourists and locals alike.
