If you’re an avid fan of Downton Abbey, the British period drama series on ITV (or PBS over here), you won’t want to miss Jessica Fellowes’ appearance in Albuquerque on February 8, 2015. The author of the best-selling book, The World of Downton Abbey will be visiting Popejoy Hall next month to talk about her book, as well as the characters, set and plot of the show. She’ll also discuss the show’s context, including the changing role of women around that time, the rise of technology, and the shift of class hierarchy after World War I in Britain.
About the Show, Book & Author
Published in 2011, Fellowes’ book takes a look at the behind the scenes drama and the secret history behind the show, which is set in the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey. The show depicts the lives of the Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era, and shows how historical events effect their lives as well as the lives of the British social hierarchy—past events shown on the show have included the news of the Titanic sinking, the start of WWI, the Marconi scandal, and the Spanish influenza pandemic. As for the book, it shows off sketches and photographs from the show as well as offers insight to the story, characters and social history. Fellowes is an English author and journalist, and since the publishing of The World of Downton Abbey, she has written two other books about the series: The Chronicles of Downton Abbey, in 2012, and A Year in the Life of Downton Abbey: Seasonal Celebrations, Traditions and Recipes, in 2014.
