When your family takes a vacation, you’ll want to get a little relaxation time in your hotel suite, but you may also want to find an enriching artistic or cultural activity to create a well-rounded getaway. Art lovers visiting Albuquerque this spring can rejoice then—during the weekend of May 7, the city will be hosting the 26th annual Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival.
What to Expect
The Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 7, 8 and 9 and will be located at the Lujan Exhibit Complex at Expo NM Fairgrounds. Here, your family will see art—including 2D, photography, sculptures, textiles, ceramics, wood, glass, metal and more—from more than 200 artists from 25 different states. See a particular piece that your family likes? Don’t worry—you can purchase any of the artworks directly from the artist on the day of the event! Your little ones can get their creativity on, too, (for free!) at the “Kids’ Creation Station,” where they can emulate the works they’ve seen all day or create something totally their own.
This festival is a must-see that attracts more than 20,000 visitors annually and has been rated amongst Sunshine Artist Magazines’ Top 100 shows in the country for a decade. This year will be especially exciting, as a brand new crop of talent—accounting for 25 percent of the total artists—will be showcasing their works at the festival! No matter if you’ve been a longtime Arts and Crafts Festival-goer or a first timer to the event, your family will experience beautiful art that will leave you all in awe.
Take It a Step Further
If your family is feeling especially inspired after attending the Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival, why not continue the artistic vibes? The Albuquerque Museum has a remarkable collection of art detailing the history of New Mexico. The museum even offers free musical performances from 2 to 5 p.m. every Saturday, making it an ideal stop for an afternoon of education and fun.
After all the art immersion your family has experienced in Albuquerque, your kids feeling like little Picassos themselves—so why not indulge them? Stop by the store to pick up some drawing paper and colored pencils, head back to the hotel suite and let their imaginations run wild. Not only will this activity be great for developing their creative sides, it’ll also give you and your partner a little peace and quiet to unwind in the hotel room for the day. All the excitement will be well worth it, though. After your experience at the Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival, you’ll be counting down the days until next year’s event!
