By doing this, you’ll have an easier time choosing a place to call your own. There are, generally speaking, 11 different sections of Albuquerque for you to consider.
1) Historic Old Town
Old Town is considered to be the heart of Albuquerque, and has been since the city was founded in 1706. It’s rich with culture and is considered the cultural center of the city, with seven museums. It also boasts a large shopping district, with more than 100 shops, and also offers galleries and restaurants. If you’re into a bustling city experience, this is where you want to be.
2) Nob Hill
Nob Hill is another vibrant district in the city, with interesting shops and fine dining offerings, plus hip, trendy night spots and clubs. Combining neon signs and architecture with locally owned businesses and shops, this area is a fashionable, of-the-moment neighborhood for those in the know.
As you might have guessed, this area is centered on the college—the University of New Mexico. It’s home to the campus as well as hotels for visitors and restaurants that are conveniently located near the Big I (I-25/I-40) interchange. If you’re older than college age, this might not be the right area for you, but if you are, it’d be perfect.
Downtown Albuquerque is home to many nightclubs, theaters, restaurants and events. It’s also home to the Albuquerque convention center. If you’ve got a high profile job or work in tourism industries, this is a good spot for you, since you’ll be in the middle of it all.
5) Airport Area
This area is close to not only the airport, but Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Laboratories, making it an ideal spot for military families and other workers. If you do a lot of traveling, this might convenient as well, since you’ll be close to the airport.
Uptown is a major business center, so if you’re a busy worker bee, this is where you’ll want to be. It’s also home to EXPO NM and two major shopping malls (ABQ Uptown and the Coronado Center), as well as the New Mexico State Fair. It’s a bustling area, featuring national brands and recognition.
If you prefer a more nature-heavy scene for your life, you’ll want to check out the Westside or Eastside. The Westside is marked with dormant volcanoes and the Petroglyph National Monument, where you can walk among ancient volcanic rock. If you’re into nature walks, you’ll love this part of town.
8) Barelas and the South Valley
Perfect for taking in the local flavor, this area of town maintains close ties to Albuquerque’s Hispanic roots, and it’s here that you’ll be submerged into an area rich with New Mexican and Mexican restaurants and culture, as well as the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This area is great if you really want to immerse yourself in local culture.
9) Balloon Fiesta Park/ N. I-25
Offering convenient access to business and entertainment opportunities, this area of town is home to Balloon Fiesta Park as well as the Balloon Museum. Many hotel chains and chain restaurants are in this area as well, so if you prefer a more local, less corporate vibe, this might not be the area for you.
The Eastside of town is also good for nature lovers, as it encompasses the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. Offering a lot of outdoor and nature activities, this area is loved by hikers, bikers and more, and also features the Sandia Peak Tram, which takes visitors to the peak of the mountain.
11) North Valley/Los Ranchos/Corrales
If you like a mix of both city life and nature, this is a great spot to be in. These areas are all in a lush, green valley, known for both great outdoor activities as well as wineries, farmer’s markets, local shops, spas and much more—it’s a perfect mix for someone new to town!
