When you’re traveling, there can be any number of reasons that you would want to bring your pet along for the fun. One big reason that people traveling through New Mexico have their pooches on the road with them is for the Rio Grande Kennel Club Dog Show. The show takes place every year at Expo New Mexico over Mother’s Day weekend in May, and attracts people of all kinds. Unfortunately, many hotels don’t allow for pets to stay with their owners, so it’s important that if you’re coming to the Rio Grande Kennel Club Dog Show, you book your stay in a hotel that loves your dog (almost) as much as you do. What should you look for in a pet-friendly hotel?
Some hotels only allow dogs, while others allow cats as well—no matter what you’re traveling for, it’s important to make sure your pet will be allowed. Some hotels may have breed restrictions, and many will have leash rules and designated dog areas outside the building where dogs are permitted to run around. Ask what the rules are for having your dog stay in the hotel and be sure to be considerate of other guests. Even if there aren’t rules that require leashes to be used all the time, be aware that not all guests may have pets with them and not all guests may be dog-friendly—it’s always best to keep your dog leashed around strangers to prevent any escalation of a situation, such as a dog greeting a stranger too enthusiastically. Most pet-friendly hotels also have restrictions regarding proof of vaccinations.
Find Out About Hotel Specifics
Ask the hotel staff if there are any pet-exclusive amenities, such as a dog park or dog run onsite, complimentary dog treats or toys, or anything else. Some hotels even have indoor off-leash playspaces for pets. Find out if there are any additional fees or expenses associated with bringing your pet with you to the hotel, including a refundable deposit or additional guest fee. You may also want to research the layout of the hotel and request a room near the exits so that when your pet needs to go out, you won’t have to go down several flights of stairs or through a very busy part of the hotel.
Pet friendly hotels can make your travel experience much more convenient and fun—just be sure to call ahead and make sure of all the policies the hotel has in place.
